Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Tenn (Golden Orange) (Gold), a pile barbed Azure bearing a sword Argent hilted Or winged of the first, between in base a buffalo skull Azure and a bitterroot flower Proper.  Attached below the shield a Blue scroll doubled and inscribed "SOUNDS OF FREEDOM" in Gold.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the colors associated with the Aviation branch.  The winged sword symbolizes aviation victory and power.  The downward thrusting barbed "V" shape emphasizes the unit's combat mission of aerial assault.  The skull is adapted from the former 163d Armored Cavalry Regiment shoulder sleeve insignia and represents past lineage.  The bitterroot is the state flower of Montana, home area of the unit.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 30 December 1988.  It was amended to revise the description and symbolism on 27 November 1989.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Montana Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors, Argent and Tenn (Golden Orange), a fleur-de-lis the middle leaf and tie Or, and outside leaves Argent.
